Horizon Foundation donates $250,000 to Star Academy

Star Academy, a K-6 charter school in Raleigh with more than 300 students, has received a holiday gift of $250,000.

Preston Byrd, Chairman of Horizon Foundation, said that the decision to make the donation to Star Academy came after he and his wife, an educator, visited with Star Academy founder Bishop Edward Stephens Jr. “Donette and I wanted to provide financial assistance to a local educational institution. After visiting with Bishop Stephens and learning about Star Academy’s success in delivering innovative learning concepts and the leadership’s vision for the school, we were impressed,” Byrd said in a news release. “We feel the school is giving elementary students a solid foundation for academic achievement and that the faculty and staff will use our investment wisely.”

Stephens founded Star Academy in 2004. His son, Edward Stephens III, now serves as the school’s chief operating officer. “We are an educational incubator that encourages critical thinking, collaboration, communication creativity and we provide the resources to ensure our educators are culturally competent,” Stephens III said in a news release. “The generous gift from Mr. Byrd and Horizon Foundation will support our school in obtaining vital resources so we continue advancing our mission in a safe, nurturing and innovative environment.” The $250,000 donation represents a 4 year commitment to the charter school from Horizon Charitable Foundation.
